In this introductory rowing program, rowers will kick off their enjoyment of a new sport in a friendly and supportive small-group environment. Sculling is a wonderful form of low-impact exercise and these sessions offer an exceptional opportunity for adults (18 and older) of all abilities to experience rowing in the waters surrounding Bair Island.
Learn to Scull is a "Level 1" introductory program that teaches sculling basics in six 2-hour sessions of coached training over two weeks. You will learn how to row in stable training singles (one-person per boat) and your teachings will include technique fundamentals, rowing terminology, safety practices, traffic patterns on our waterway, and navigating a 1x.
After completing two weeks (12 hours) of instruction, most participants have the skills and confidence to row safely on their own or with rowing buddies, outside of a class, or they may join a team or Level 2 class.

In sculling, rowers have two oars each, enabling them to row in a boat by themselves (in a single or 1x). Scullers also row with one other person (in a double or 2x), or with three other people (in a quad or 4x). Sculling in a single is ideal for people who want to train on their own schedule.
Sweep rowing is a team sport with each rower holding one long oar in both hands. You row on either the left (port) or right (starboard) side of the boat. Bigger sweep boats usually have a coxswain to steer the boat and direct the crew. Sweep boats include eights, coxed and straight (un-coxed) fours, and pairs.
