Updates & News

Friends, Family, Parties

There are lots of ways for you to share BIAC with your friends and family; promotion by our membership is the best marketing tool we have!

  • Elisa’s friends helped her celebrate her birthday by coming to the rentals with cupcakes.
  • Katie’s dad was visiting so she took him out kayaking to show him where she rows.
  • Patty encouraged her daughter’s partner to take a learn to scull class.
  • Steve has invited his buddies out to kayak.
  • Lauren and Elisa hosted corporate team events at BIAC.

Good Luck!

On July 7-10 some BIAC members will be racing at USA Trials III in Princeton, N.J. hoping to win and advance to the World Championships in Austria in August. Russell Gernaat will compete in the PR2 M2x, coached by Alice and Molly Reckford will be stroking the Ltwt W4x.

Beware Flying Refrigerator

A start-up company plans to test a single person drone that flies 10 feet off the water at the port. They plan to stay 200 feet from recreational users. At first, they had buoys out to mark their operations, but that seems more hazard than help. When they are testing, they will have a safety launch with them. If you hear a lawn-mower then see a flying refrigerator with ten propellers, stay your course and they should avoid you. If you have any issues please let Alice or Jon know.

BIAC vs. Private

In the rare event you accidentally take out a private boat or oars, please return the equipment as soon as you realize the mistake and let Alice know (so the owner can secure equipment the way they like). We all make mistakes; not telling anyone compounds the error.

How to identify BIAC equipment:

  • All BIAC small rowing boats have a six-inch blue and white circle sticker. Do NOT row a boat without this sticker.
  • BIAC boats are stored on racks with a blue and green stripe. Private boat racks have an orange stripe.
  • All BIAC sculling oars have tape on them as do a few private oars. If it is not a BIAC tape pattern, please do NOT use them. See the oar labeling and map.
  • BIAC members should not take out Norcal, Serra nor Menlo equipment unless you/your coach has explicit approval.

All racks in the yard are labeled with colored tape. Blue/green is BIAC; orange is private; yellow is Norcal; etc. Only use equipment on a blue/green rack.

Equipment Updates

  • Ticket Maintenance System – If you discover a problem with a boat, oar, erg, cox box etc., first – please try to fix it yourself (i.e. if something is loose or a spacer is missing). If you cannot fix it, please fill out a maintenance ticket online. This is the best and fastest way to resolve an issue.
  • New Sculling Oars – BIAC has a brand-new set of sculling oars! They are in the right oar cabinet (along the back of the main yard) on the far-left side. They have four green stripes.

Pick the right oars – The goal with sculling blades is for hand crossover as well as load at the catch to feel consistent in different boats. Click here to see the system and look for posted signs to help you understand oar usage. Please be sure your oars are put away at the end of the row, ideally in the correct slot. If you pay the BIAC equipment fee you may use any available set. (But don't use private oars! See the earlier item in this newsletter.)

All BIAC oars have colored tape that correspond to where they go in an oar cabinet. For sculling oars, the tape also indicates the length of the oar and recommended usage (1x, 2x, 4x). Look for signs explaining usage or see the document online. Please also store oars with blades sideways as you see in the photo above.

Club Updates

  • Parent/child rowing – BIAC has a new policy that allows qualified members to row with their children, who are also members. Here is Chris Flynn and his daughter out for a row. BIAC values families spending time together on the water and we have different memberships for rowing and paddling to accommodate that need.
  • Recreational Rowing (R2), BIAC's newest coached program, kicked off in June with 13 rowers, one coxswain, and one coach. Welcome to BIAC, Coach J! Some rowers had only rowed singles and welcomed the challenge of rowing in a team boat. If you've been away from, or never tried, larger boats, consider joining R2, (Wed./Fri 5:30am - 7:30am). Click here to learn more or email Susan.

Volunteer Opportunities

  • Water Trail Exploration – The SF Bay Area Water Trail has several goals including enhancing community connections to the Bay and increasing education, safety and appropriate boating behavior near sensitive shoreline habitat. We need a volunteer to explore a BIAC/Water Trail partnership and to complete the application process. Please email Alice if you can help.
  • Volunteer with Veterans – BIAC is busy finalizing summer events with several veterans groups. If you are interested in volunteering, please sign up online and we will contact you as details are confirmed.
    >> Woman's Trauma Recovery Program – we are finally working with the WTRP!
    >> Team Red White & Blue will try rowing and then everyone will go to Devil Canyon Brewery for beer and food trucks. Team RWB enriches the lives of America’s veterans by connecting them to their community through physical and social activity.
    >> In September, we will host our 4th Annual Veterans Learn to Row.
  • Learn to Row – See "Upcoming Events" and volunteer here.

Upcoming Events

  • We wish everyone a safe and enjoyable Independence Day! BIAC will be open but not hosting any festivities this 4th of July.
  • Our Learn to Row season is passing quickly and our next session is July 20-21! We are currently still taking sign-ups for our remaining sessions so direct everyone you meet to this wonderful sport and our summer activities page. Get a jump on volunteer hours by signing up here.
  • Expert sculling coach Sara Nevin leads an intensive sculling camp July 19-21 with lots of personal attention to fine tune your skills. Get member pricing and register here or tell out-of-town friends to come row with you.

The next Learn to Row session is July 20-21. Tell your friends! This photo is from a recent LTR.

Program Highlights

Crew Team Tidings

Congratulations to all racers who competed at Northwest Masters Regional Championships in Vancouver, WA on June 21-23. BIAC athletes medaled in 11 events including golds in the MB1x (Jon Carlson), WE4x, WE1x (Kathleen Faust), WG1x (Kass Young) and WF2x. What an amazing job! Check out full results online. Some BIAC rowers will head down to Long Beach in July for Southwest Masters Regionals. Good luck and have fun!

A HUGE thank you to Justin Perry (far right). The Norcal driver/helper/organizer-of-all-things drove the Norcal trailer to Vancouver, WA for BIAC and managed some unexpected trailer issues like a rock-star. We really appreciate him!

Norcal News

As you may know, BIAC and Norcal have been working to build a strong and mutually beneficial relationship. For example, our masters took the Norcal trailer and truck to NW Regionals recently and a Norcal M4x and W2- used BIAC Hudson racing boats for Youth Nationals. Below is a letter from bow of the W2- who placed 7th in the Nation.

Dear BIAC, Thanks so much for your generosity in letting Ava and me use the Hudson Hammerhead double for Regionals and Nationals! It’s an awesome boat that really improved our rowing and made a big difference in training. We’re super thankful for the opportunity to use it and for the extra speed! – Sarah Hope

Paddling Bulletin

  • RWC Parks & Rec paddle camps have started! Last camp the kids had a chance to get out into the bay and experience some open water paddling with some “bumps” and winds. Great times by all.
  • We recently picked up six V7 Surfskis for the coached programs – over $10k in new equipment – and we have new club wing blades coming in next month; courtesy of Epic Kayaks, one of our long time sponsors.
  • We also acquired two new 1-person Outrigger Canoes for the Juniors.
  • A big shout out to Cindy Lee and Mike Martinez who have been helping with the Parks and Rec Classes and Novice paddling. Many thanks to Cindy and Mike for their generosity and help building our Paddling Program on and off the water.
  • Last month Cindy Lee, Kathy Palzewic-Jensen and Sunshine Smith participated the Cal 100. They raced in a double as a relay team. Unfortunately, within the first 5 miles, they hit a rock with the rudder and put a hole in the boat. Fortunately, Johnny Puakeaa (Owner of Puakeaa Designs) was on hand and helped repair the canoe, though they did not have a rudder for the remainder of the race. (95 miles without a rudder was awesome!) Their time of 13:45 was very respectable considering they had to stop for almost a hour and a half to repair the canoe. Cindy and Kathy are both experienced at these marathon races, with course records set at the Yukon Quest River race, where they have done the 440 mile race in under 44 hrs. Great job ladies!

10-year-old Jax enjoys the Parks & Rec paddling.

Current and former BIAC members recently raced the Cal 100, a river race starting in Redding and finishing near Chico.

Sculling Scoop

Come row with Coach Alice or Coach Kathleen! If you know how to scull and would like some coaching, we have a lot of drop-in classes offered now including early morning, mid-day and Saturday options exist. Learn more about Sculling Level 2 classes and sign up here.

Want something more advanced? Sign up for the Intensive Sculling Camp described in "Upcoming Events."

Serra Rowing

July kicks off Padre Learn-to-Row Rowing Camps with three weekly sessions to choose from. Open to all 7th-12th grade students, camp is an introduction to competitive high school sweep and sculling rowing designed for prospective student-athletes with little or no experience in the sport. Learn more online.

Water Consumption

**Due to the heavy construction traffic on Maple, the main water line to BIAC was broken and leaked for two days before it was noticed. The City made the repair for free and will waive the overage.
