The Learn to Row Season has ended for 2019.

Learn to Row at BIAC

Rowing is a great way to have fun, make friends, get a workout and experience a difference perspective on the Bay. And it's right here in Redwood City! In this sweep rowing intro program, rowers will kick off their enjoyment of a new sport in a friendly and supportive environment. Rowing is a wonderful form of low-impact exercise and these sessions offer an exceptional opportunity for adults (21 and older) of all abilities to experience rowing in the waters surrounding Bair Island.

Learn to Row is our basic introductory sweep program which teaches you sweep rowing basics in six hours of coached training spread over a few days to maximize learning. Classes include learning how to row in an indoor rowing machine or "erg" (ergometer) then progress to rowing in a stable "barge" in which you will become familiar with rowing terminology and the fundamentals of technique while learning to row in a fun group environment. Finally, rowers will move into traditional sweep boats.

What is sweep rowing?

In sweep rowing, each rower uses one oar. Sweep boats typically have four or eight rowers plus a coxswain steering the boat and calling rowing commands. Sweep rowing is ideal for someone who wants the camaraderie of a team and to move fast in big boats.

Upon successful completion of Learn to Row, participants progress to the Novice Masters team. Your Learn to Row fee ($300) includes a one-month trial membership at BIAC and one month of concurrent coaching fees on the Novice Masters team. This fun group of 20-30 new rowers meets Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5-7am and Saturdays from 6-8am. Additional sessions on Wednesday evenings are available to novice rowers and will focus on the fundamentals of the rowing stroke. After your one-month trial, we hope you will join BIAC and continue to train and race with your fellow novices. Learn more about membership here.
