BIAC hosts an annual NLTRD event, open to the public, as do many other clubs across the country as a part of USRowing National Learn to Row Day. On Sunday, June 12th, we had 88 guests from 20 cities across the Bay Area, ranging from complete beginners to those with rowing experience eager to get back in a boat.
The event was an all-club effort, fueled by 60+ BIAC volunteers from corners of BIAC membership. The day included erg coaching on the deck, anatomy of a boat, and on-the-water rowing sessions. Three 8's made 6 trips out each, with 5-to-6 guest rowers per boat. That's 24 trips to the condos and back!
Many BIAC members brought co-workers, friends, and family, which enriched the day. Mini croissant sandwiches, fruit bars, raisin boxes, coffee, and cold water were served up in a festive, fun atmosphere. Comments in the Contacts book from one of our guests summed it up like this: "Way, way AMAZING!!!!" Thank you to our many volunteers for executing such an excellent and welcoming event!

Volunteer for the California Coastal Clean-up to be held at BIAC on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 8:30am-12:15pm. Volunteering for the clean-up counts towards your BIAC volunteer hour requirement of 12 hrs. This year will be BIAC's 4th consecutive year participating in this statewide event. You will be provided all clean up materials to remove trash & debris from the shorelines surrounding BIAC.
Questions? Want to sign up? Email Susan Rowinski, BIAC Clean up Coordinator. Indicate if you plan to wear rubber boots, hiking boots or sneakers the day of the clean up. New Kayak Racks: Seeking Volunteers to help BIAC design and construct new kayak racks to help us keep the club's kayak fleet organized and easily accessible. Please email Operations Director, Chris Flynn if this is a project you are willing to work on as a helper or to lead.
Ongoing Roles: Volunteers do so many wonderful things around BIAC. It is amazing to see the club boatyard and boathouse so well organized day after day. Thank you to everyone who contributes. Your efforts are recognized! Chris is looking to fill a few regular ongoing roles that volunteers can do in their spare time. Please reach out to Chris to sign up or for more info:
- Refill the soap & water buckets with fresh water and soap 1-2 times a week.
- Flush outboard engines to help clear dirt and silt from our launch engines to help them to run better and longer before needing service. About 1 time a month.
- Gas can re-filler for the BIAC launches. About 1 time a week. Using your own vehicle (truck).
And don't forget helping the Adaptive Erg Classes, signing up to "Rabbit", or volunteering at the California Coastal Clean-up listed elsewhere in this newsletter.

The full USRowing board met in person in June. The org is making good progress: financials are on track for the year and they're expanding programs like Stem to Stern. USR is working this year to be more athlete-centered and to have well-defined and effective processes for addressing athlete grievances, which were reviewed in the meeting. Senior National Team athletes appreciate the increased transparency and fairness of athlete support and training/selection processed under Josy Verdonkschot. The agenda also included a discussion of issues from regional members. Issues from members included concern over race venue selection, club support and masters support. In our region, a couple of other clubs mentioned their burgeoning interest in coastal rowing, where BIAC leads.
