BIAC July Newsletter
Newsletter | July 2021

Coastal rowing comes to BIAC! With the addition of 3 coastal boats to the BIAC fleet and the generous use of 3 coastal boats owned by Norcal, BIAC rowers have a chance to experience different aspects of coastal and open water rowing in our new coastal classes. Above, two quads do short races around a buoy. The coastal quads are extremely stable and we've also used them in our new Intro to Rowing courses. Consider taking a class or tell a friend to come out and row!

Party Like It's 2021

Come down to BIAC around 4pm on Saturday, July 10, for a Summer Party on the deck. We will celebrate with Coach Alice before she moves away, as well as enjoy a summer afternoon and the fact we can spend time together again. Contact Heidi or Renata with questions. Tell us you're coming and whether you're bringing something here.

Dredging is an important process in maintaining and improving our waterway (read more) but it can be a safety hazard. Stay well clear of the dredger, stay alert and make yourself visible with hi-viz clothing and lights.
Dredger Ahead!

Dredging will be an ongoing, 24/7 operation through mid-October. The project has begun at the innermost portion of the Port and will work its way outbound to the mouth of where Redwood Creek empties into the Bay. The dredging contractor has made a strong commitment to recreational boater safety. Please do your part by being aware of the dredge and barge and staying clear of the operation. Learn to Row

BIAC’s learn-to-scull classes are in full swing and non-stop all summer long. As these new scullers finish their class, many are joining our club and our novice team. Please welcome these new members to BIAC. Please also try to be considerate and helpful as you see those who may need additional assistance around our docks and with our local traffic patterns. We were all beginners at one point.

Our morning Learn to Row classes are full for the remainder of the summer, but we still have spots in the afternoon and weekend classes. Spread the word about rowing opportunities at BIAC!

Volunteer Opportunities for Members

Be a Leader

BIAC needs a few volunteers to lead our efforts to care for our club and equipment. These roles don't require you to DO all the work, but rather to plan what needs doing and to galvanize your friends and teammates to regular action. Please email Sharon your interest in any of these key roles:

  • Gardening & Grounds. Help improve our curb appeal and beautify BIAC.
  • Facilities. Create a plan & priorities for maintaining our buildings, docks, oar closets, racks, etc.
  • Sweep Boat Maintenance. Help track and coordinate maintenance on sweep boats and organize volunteers.

Friendly Paddler Wanted

Paddlers, did you know that the rowing groups each have a "lead" who coordinates activities and works with the coach and/or Chris? Chris would like to see the paddlers implement that practice, too, so paddlers can be connected to BIAC and the Club can be responsive to your needs. This is a small monthly volunteer opportunity, probably 1-2 hours/month. If you'd like to help build cohesion among the paddlers, please email Sharon.

Are you plugged in on social?

If you're a social media maven, BIAC would love your help keeping up our social profile. We communicate with members, other rowers, equipment manufacturers, USRowing and others over Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. It really helps us recruit new members and secure event sponsors when we have an active online community. Should we be rocking Tik Tok? Can you help us keep up our profile? Email Sharon or DM the club on Twitter (@BIACRWC).

Thank you to Volunteer Leaders

We are all grateful to the members who step up beyond our minimal 12 hour volunteer requirement and who keep BIAC humming. Recently members have taken on new roles to coordinate vital club functions. Special thanks to Piras for coordinating the BIAC team kit, Renata for organizing our social calendar and Surra for investigating our technology strategy.

Events

The Freedom Rows program is a partnership with USRowing and the Veterans Administration. BIAC has been a partnering club for over six years.

Para Program at BIAC

Last weekend we had our first Veterans Learn to Row in over 18 months. Thank you to all the volunteers who came out. One long-time member said, “I think this is the most important program BIAC offers, I always sign up!” Our numbers were low due to many of our non-profit partners still being closed, a reminder of how lucky we are that BIAC was able to stay open during the last 18 months. Those who attended had a great time.

Learn more and register for the July coastal rowing series here.
Coastal Rowing At BIAC

An array of BIAC rowers, from long-time members to rowers who took up sculling during the pandemic, participated in the L2: Coastal Rowing classes in June. They learned some tricks of rowing in wind and waves and tried out the coastal fleet at BIAC. "Taking the Coastal class was a blast. It adds a variety of rowing in less than ideal weather." – Bassel Ojjeh

Summer Skills Team

On June 8th, excited rowers gathered for the third incarnation of Coach J’s (Janet Bellantoni) summer coaching series: the Summer Skills Team. This year, the focus of the 5-week series is on skills and drills that translate to better rowing in any boat. Participants were thrilled to be back in big boats again and have an opportunity to vie for the coveted High-Viz Star in friendly, creative competitions. The next session of Summer Skills begins July 13th. This popular offering is currently full, but there is a waitlist and opportunity for alternates to participate - see the details on the website and reach out to Susan Adams if you are interested.

Equipment and Facility Updates

Safety Reminder

Please tidy up the boatyard after every outing, and put the cleaning buckets and other items away on the edges of the yard. Last week a member took a nasty spill, tripping over something left in the yard. We all have limited visibility when carrying boats, so please keep the yard free of hazards.

Club Boat Use for Regattas

BIAC members are participating in a few upcoming regattas, River City Rebellion (July 11) and the North Tahoe Regatta (Aug. 8). If you would like to use BIAC club equipment for any event, please reserve your boat by emailing Chris at his Operations email with the specific boat you request and the dates you need it. Please don't use his personal email, nor tell him in person. The website boat reservation has been decommissioned.

Olympics & Paralympics

Team BIAC to Team USA

Recently, four members of BIAC and Team USA were training together in Southern California as they prepare to race in Tokyo. Good luck Molly, Laura, Russell and Alice. You can follow them on Instagram at @mollyrecksergs and @Tokyoboundpr2mx2x. Learn more about Russell's journey in this article.

Two-Time Olympian

Another BIAC member, Aisha Chow, is headed to her 2nd Olympics to compete in the Womens 1x for Trinidad & Tobago. Aisha trains full-time at BIAC and you can catch her speeding by almost any morning. She competed in the 2016 Olympics and is excited to be representing her home country one again in Tokyo. She qualified for the Olympics in Rio back in March and you can follow her on Instagram @triniblades

How to Watch

Olympic rowing races run July 23 to July 30, generally starting at 8:30am Tokyo time. The schedule (local time) is here. In California, we'll be watching starting at 4:30pm the day before due to the time change.

NBC will offer primetime coverage of the Olympics and Paralympics, which can be accessed on every major streaming service. In addition to NBC’s live broadcast, viewers can watch additional commentary and analysis on NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports App with some live coverage on the Peacock app. Learn more here.

Education & Safety

Righting and re-entering a flipped single is a task experienced scullers seldom contemplate, nevermind practice. Recently, however, on one windy, challenging morning, I had the fortunate opportunity to go for an unplanned swim.

My first thoughts were of my banana snack floating swiftly away in the current, second, my thoughts turned to see how far I’d have to swim to make it to shore and whether I was safe. Ruling out swimming and confirming that I was safe from any other oncoming traffic, I instinctively thought of all the flip test videos I had recently watched with our learn to scull classes. Without missing a beat, I was right atop my shell and making my way to the nearest dock to empty out the excess water in my hull and continue my row.

This experience was a wake-up call to me on how easily this can happen to even the most seasoned scullers. If you haven’t had the opportunity to practice this skill recently, I encourage you to watch this video from Calm Waters Rowing and give it a try. Even if you don’t practice this skill, having the video in the back of your head could be a lifesaver one day. – Operations Manager, Chris Flynn
