Coastal Rowing is Coming

Coastal rowing is increasing in popularity and may soon be part of the Olympics. USRowing is working to develop four coastal regattas in 2019 including one here in the Bay Area in early October (our own Sharon Wienbar is on the national steering committee)! BIAC is considering hosting the event. If you would like to be part of the committee please email Sharon. Details for racers will follow. Also, let Sharon know if you're interested in representing BIAC at the World Rowing Coastal Championships in Hong Kong later this year.

Redwood Creek Clean-up

On Feb 23. from 9am-1pm, BIAC and Oracle will again partner for the 3rd Annual Clean Redwood Creek event. Positively impact our waterways AND earn volunteer hours. Rowers, kayakers, family and friends (ages 13+) are all welcome! Breakfast, lunch and Oracle volunteer t-shirts will be provided.

The event is at BIAC, Sat., Feb. 23, 9am-1pm (work the hours you want). Please RSVP by Feb. 13 so we can properly prepare for the event.

Congrats BIAC Great Eight

Thank you so much to everyone who voted for BIAC Masters' annual awards. A total of 46 people called out 59 members for making a positive impact at the club this last year. Not everyone gets to win, but you all count in a big, big way!

  • Rising Star: Kate Glazko
  • Hardest Worker: Alice Henderson
  • Most Likely to Make BIAC Proud: Drew Riviello
  • Resident Guru: Jen Aguirre
  • Club Spirit: Tom Taylor
  • I Want You in My Boat: Roy Zheng
  • Nutritional Expert: Sharon Wienbar
  • Troubleshooter-in-Chief: Chuck Bonnici
  • Hidden Gem: Jewel Wilk

Equipment Updates

  • Proper Oar Rack Storage – The new oar rack is impressive! The oars need to be stored with the side view towards the door (see photo). If the entire blade is facing the door, when neighboring oars are removed they can catch these oars and knock them out. Also, each rack is labeled. Please be sure to return the oars to the correct place [rack chart]. Finally, new doors and latches protect the oars. Please close the latches every time to prevent damage to the doors and oars.
  • New Trailer Fund – For Masters rowers who trailer boats to races, we are adding a $5 per person surcharge over the direct cost of the trailering. This money will be put in reserve toward the eventual purchase of a new trailer and also help maintain the current trailer.
  • Tie Boats Down – The wind is no joke and we've had some boats blow off racks. We all must take responsibility for the proper care and handling of our equipment to prevent major damage. Tie boats down every time.

The black oars on the left are stored correctly, with the side view facing the door.

Club Updates

  • Be Mindful with Music – We each enjoy BIAC and need to be thoughtful of others in our shared space. The public speaker was removed for two weeks because the music was inappropriate. Please help remind each other to think about the lyrics before you hit play. Not only do we need to respect each other but please know that we have donors, VIP guests and children at the boathouse and need to behave appropriately.
  • Indoor Rowing – We are hoping to start an indoor rowing class for members and as a way to increase membership. We hope to add the programming in February. The class will be a fun hour of cardio. Stay tuned!

"Radio-friendly" music should be played in the speakers at all times, even if you think you are the only one at the boathouse.

Volunteer Opportunities

BIAC Winter Clean-up Day

Please join us on Sunday, Feb. 10 from 8am-Noon for a few hours to help tidy up BIAC. We have gravel to move, and weeds to pull. BIAC is our home and it needs a tidy up. You are encouraged to bring tools and gloves. Can’t make the cleanup but want to help? Please email Alice for some independent projects.

  • Don't forget – All BIAC members must complete 12 volunteer hours by May 1 (the end of the membership year). Click here to log your hours.
  • Redwood City Creek Cleanup on Feb. 23. See details earlier in this newsletter.

Thanks to everyone (juniors and masters alike) who helped to fill the biggest dumpster available on our last cleanup day! We got rid of old/useless equipment and junk that has piled up over time.

Program Highlights

Menlo College

Menlo College welcomes Kerry Kingdon (pictured), BIAC member and active racer, as Assistant Coach, Recruiting Coordinator for the Rowing Program.

Para Athletes

USA Para Camp – The first week in January, some of the top USA Para National team members trained at the elite training center in Chula Vista, Ca. Our own Russell Gernaat was there rowing along with Alice Henderson and Chuck Bonnici coaching. It was a great week of double days and growth.
